I had the great pleasure to photograph this sweet expecting couple yesterday. Little W's nursery room was lovely, complete with an adorable little rocking chair that belonged to mom-to-be when she was little. Here are a few of my favorites from their session.

I have been photographing this young man on his birthday for the past three years now, and I can honestly say that this session yesterday was one of the most enjoyable outdoor winter sessions I've had! No heavy winter jackets, mittens, scarves and boots to deal with, no snow, no bitterly cold windchills (which is what we're supposed to have in Minnesota in January). Instead, we broke the record high with a temperature of 55 degrees and had no snow because well, because it hasn't snowed to speak of here yet!

All that is about to change tho, according to our weather forecasters, who say that the snow is expected late this afternoon and by tomorrow, our high will only reach 14 degrees. Only in Minnesota, right? :) But at least we got some fun photos that won't be his "typical" birthday photos! Happy birthday, C!

Color or Black and White?

It's interesting how removing the color in a photograph can change the entire feel of it.

I took this photo today as the late afternoon winter sun was low in the sky. I played with the color saturation because I wanted it to have a vintage feel that might perhaps invoke feelings of nostalgic childhood memories for the viewer.

As I was changing the colors, I accidentally changed it to black and white. Instantly the mood of the photo went (in my opinion) from happy memories to a stark, almost tragic feel.

Is it Spring?

Now don't get me wrong, I love this spring-like weather we've been having lately. But it just feels wrong, somehow, when I can go outside without a jacket in January in Minnesota and there's no snow and the temperature is in the mid 40s.

A couple more days of potential record highs close to 50, and then the Minnesota winter weather comes back full force - snow and 14 degrees for the high!

Meet Frisco and Tuesday. Are these gorgeous cats, or what? Although you wouldn't know it by looking at the photos, Tuesday (the charcoal grey) was very shy and preferred to stay just out of camera range for much of the session. Frisco, however, enjoyed inspecting the camera lens "close up" every so often! I love the photos we got with a little bit of patience, a few cat toys and some tasty snacks! ;o))

I can remember holding my nephew in the hospital shortly after he was born, petrified that he was going to wiggle out of my grasp, fall and break into pieces, much to the amusement of my brother-in-law, who assured me that newborns do not just jump out of your arms. (a fact I discovered to be true once I had children of my own, LOL!!) ;o)))

At the risk of embarassing him now, he has grown into a remarkable young man, and I wish him all the best in his senior year and beyond.

This baby bird chose our deck to stop and rest upon while learning to fly this weekend. The girls were happy to encourage him (her?) in his flying lessons and soon, with parents keeping a close eye on him from a nearby tree, he flew off to the front of the house and then on to the neighbor's yard. A Weekend for Birthday Celebrations

This was quite the weekend for birthday celebrations. Not only did we attend three, I knew of three others being celebrated this weekend also!

At this one, while younger sister was making her wish, blowing out the candles and removing decorations from the top, older sister was still contemplating her wish. Apparently she was taking a bit too long and younger sister decided to help her blow them out!

A Princess Luncheon

A princess luncheon is in order when the birthday princess is turning six! Princess friends arrived in their finest gowns, decorated lovely crowns for themselves, and played Pin the Crown on the Princess. A lunch of finger sandwiches, chocolate dipped strawberries, carrot sticks and jello was served in the royal dining room. The princesses then adjourned to the sitting room where the opening of gifts took place, followed by a chorus of Happy Birthday and cake and ice cream back in the royal dining room. If the noise level and giggling was any indication, I'd say a fun afternoon was had by all! :-)

The first snow of the season is always pretty, even when that first snow is 6-7" of the HEAVY, WET kind that all comes down at once in less than an hour before a photo shoot! It makes for for taking family photos a little chilly tho, especially when you factor in a brisk 32 degree wind blowing around you too! I met this family of four at their home for a few warm, indoor shots, then we drove out to a neighboring barn for the rest. They were all such great sports, standing out there for a few quick photos when even I, in my heavy jacket, would have called it quits long before they did! LOL!! ;o) I'm glad they decided to stick with the original outdoor location plan, too. I love their bright colors against the white barn siding. And thanks, A & I, for putting up with the cold as long as you did. You did great!! :o)

It was another gorgeous sunny afternoon for picture taking yesterday, and this time I met up with Jasper and Sweetie at their rural home in Wisconsin. Jasper was full of energy, bounding here and there in search of mysterious scents. After a few attempts at instructing him to sit and smile pretty, I just let him lead and I followed, much like I do with the children I photograph, and that's when I got these great shots.

Sweetie was jsut the opposite, laid back and relaxed, as most cats are. :) And not that she needed any incentive to pose pretty, a few morsels of chicken were always daintily accepted!

I met up with the S family this weekend to take some family photos for them. It's been a year since I photographed these two brothers, and it was fun to look back and see how much they've grown. The weather was beautiful after a week of typhoon-like wind and rain (well, almost!) LOL We were even on the bridge at just the right time to watch a train go across. The boys loved that!

This summer my daughters and I raised Monarch butterflies, watching them as they grew from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly. We found one final caterpillar on the milkweed plants about a month ago and transferred him to our butterfly hotel. Usually they spend about 10 days in their chrysalis stage, but for some reason, this one remained in this stage for almost three weeks! I really wasn't expect it to hatch, but then one day, about a month after we found him as a caterpillar, he finally emerged as this beautiful butterfly! My daughter asked, "Which way is Mexico, momma?" since Monarchs born in late fall make the long migration to Mexico or southern California. She then decided that we needed to release him on the south side of the yard so he wouldn't have as far to fly! LOL Good luck on your journey, Mr. Monarch!

I met up with this little guy, Mr. C., and his family at a local park this last weekend. We had fun feeding the geese, throwing sticks in the water, and playing on the playground equipment. It was gorgeous afternoon - probably one of our last as they're predicting snow flurries this week! I've been working on designing a new look for my logo, and I think I've finally come up with something I like, something simple yet elegant. Last Days of Summer

This morning on the drive in to work I realized that the leaves are starting to change colors. That means that summer is almost over, fall will be here and gone before we know it, and oh-too-soon my photos will have that cold white stuff called SNOW in the background! Not quite sure I'm ready for all that shoveling exercise yet! LOL Last weekend we enjoyed a gorgeous sunny late afternoon playing tag and picking flowers. What a perfect end to summer!

Butterflies and Best Friends

This summer our family educational project has been raising Monarch butterflies. We've had an abundance of Monarch caterpillars in the garden this year munching on whorled milkweed plants so we fixed up a caterpillar "house" from a wire pet carrier (thanks, neighbor!) :o) and tulle netting. Then we filled it with milkweed plants and caterpillars. Within a couple of weeks each caterpillar began turning into a chrysalis. We were able to track the progress of their transformation over the next couple of weeks by watching the color of their chrysalis turn from a light green with beautiful gold "jewels" on it to black and orange as the wings became visible inside. As each butterfly began to emerge, we would give them a day for their wings to dry and then release them back into the wild for destinations unknown.

Some fun facts that we've learned during this project:

>A Monarch egg hatches within 3-8 days and is no bigger than the head of a pin.
>The only food Monarchs eat is the milkweed plant.
>They remain in the caterpillar form for 7-17 days.
>During their caterpillar stage they will grow up to 2,000 times it's size.
>They form a chrysalis and remain in this stage for 8-15 days. The day before it emerges the chrysalis becomes transparent and you can see its black and orange wings.
>Monarchs born in the spring and early summer live for only 2-6 weeks. Monarchs born in late summer migrate to Mexico for the winter and may live up to 8 months or longer.
>The male monarch has a spot on each lower wing, the females do not have this spot.

We started outside to let her run off some of that energy, and then took a moment to bask in the sun. I had the pleasure to meet this adorable newborn Baby G and his big sister Miss E last week. Baby G was the perfect little model, slumbering peacefully while I posed him this way and that, and waking at the very end so we could get a few shots of those big dark eyes of his too. His big sister absolutely adores him, as was evident with how gentle she was with him. Wouldn't you love to know what he was dreaming about?

I've had a few computer problems recently so I'm a bit behind on my posts, but I'll try to catch up now this week.

A couple weeks ago, I had gone out for an early morning walk, intending to go just a "little" ways, and ended up going around a BIG block... 5.8 miles in total! Along the way I had noticed this spider web reflecting in the early morning light. After I (finally!) made it back home, I grabbed my camera, hopped in the truck, and set out to see if I could capture the image with my camera. Luckily for me (and probably for him too!) the spider was nowhere in sight when I found the web again!

Ahhh newborns. It's hard for me to remember mine being that soft and little once! This beautiful baby girl decided that she just did not want to nap or be uncovered during our session but we were able to get a few adorable photos anyway.
